MindStudio vs n8n comparison

MindStudio vs n8n comes down to who builds and what they build. MindStudio is an AI-first agent builder for people who do not want to write code: it gives you 200+ models without separate provider accounts, charges model usage at cost, and lets you ship an agent as a web app, browser extension, API or MCP server. n8n is a workflow automation platform with strong AI agent features, aimed at technical users: it connects to almost any system, can be self-hosted for free, and charges by workflow execution on its cloud plans. If non-developers are building AI agents, start with MindStudio. If you are automating processes across many systems and want control over hosting, start with n8n.

What MindStudio Does Well

MindStudio is built around the agent rather than the workflow. You design an agent visually, pick from more than 200 text, image and video models from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and publish it in whichever form suits the user: an AI-powered web app, a scheduled background agent, a browser extension, an agent that runs when an email arrives, a webhook or API endpoint, or an MCP server that other AI tools can call. MindStudio lists more than 1,000 integrations.

Its pricing model is also simple to reason about. Model usage is charged at the provider’s price with no markup, and MindStudio says you pay exactly what you would pay with your own keys. You can set per-agent and total spending limits and see run costs per agent, which matters once several people are building.

What n8n Does Well

n8n is the stronger tool when the agent is one step in a bigger process. Its AI Agent node sits inside a workflow that can pull from a database, call internal APIs, branch on the result, wait for approval and write back to your CRM, all in one place. Every n8n plan includes agents, MCP and AI nodes, and the Pro plan adds metric-based evaluations so you can score agent output against a test set.

n8n’s other advantage is hosting. The Community edition is free to self-host, which suits teams with data-residency rules or high volumes. The trade-off is that you run the server, updates, backups and security yourself; our guide to the best way to self-host n8n covers what that involves. n8n is fair-code under its Sustainable Use License rather than OSI open source, which matters if you plan to resell or embed it.

Pricing Compared

PlanPriceWhat you get
MindStudio Free$0 plus usage1 agent, 1,000 runs a month
MindStudio Individual$20/month, or $16/month billed yearly, plus usageUnlimited agents and runs
MindStudio BusinessCustomTeam workspace, SSO, audit logs, budgets and alerts, own models, self-hosting
n8n CommunityFree (self-hosted)Run it on your own server
n8n Starter€20/month billed yearly2,500 executions, 5 concurrent, max 5 minutes per execution
n8n Pro€50/month billed yearly10,000 executions, evaluations, longer execution time
n8n Business€667/month billed yearly40,000 executions, self-hosted, SSO, environments, queue mode, Git

The key difference is what each one charges for. MindStudio’s paid plan has unlimited runs, and you pay for model usage on top. n8n Cloud counts executions, where one execution is a single run of a whole workflow regardless of how many steps it has, and your model calls are billed by your provider separately. For the same model and the same prompt, the token cost is the same on both, because MindStudio passes model usage through at cost. What differs is the platform fee and how it scales:

  • At about 1,000 agent runs a month, MindStudio Individual ($20) and n8n Starter (€20, 2,500 executions) cost about the same before model usage.
  • At 5,000 runs a month, n8n Starter is exhausted and you move to Pro at €50; MindStudio Individual stays at $20 plus usage.
  • Self-hosted n8n removes the platform fee entirely, but you pay for the server and your own time.

One more practical point: on n8n Starter, a single execution can run for at most five minutes. Long, multi-step agents that browse or wait on slow tools can hit that limit, so check it before choosing the cheapest plan.

Building AI Agents: Day-to-Day Differences

  • Learning curve. MindStudio is designed for people who don’t code. n8n rewards comfort with JSON, expressions and occasional JavaScript.
  • Model choice. MindStudio gives you its catalogue without opening accounts with each provider. In n8n you add credentials for each provider you use.
  • Cost visibility. MindStudio shows run costs per agent and supports spending limits. In n8n, a GitHub issue reported that the AI Agent node does not pass the model’s token usage to its output, and it was closed as not planned, so most teams track model spend in the provider’s dashboard instead.
  • Process depth. n8n is better when the agent must sit inside branching logic, approvals, retries and many system integrations.
  • Distribution. MindStudio makes it easy to hand an agent to non-technical users as an app or browser extension. n8n agents usually live behind a chat trigger, webhook or internal tool.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose MindStudio if…Choose n8n if…
Non-developers will build and maintain the agentsEngineers or technical ops people will build them
You want many models without managing provider accountsYou already have provider accounts and want full control
The agent is the product: an app, extension or API for usersThe agent is one step in a larger automated process
You want spend limits and per-agent cost tracking built inYou need free self-hosting or data on your own servers

Many teams use both: n8n to collect and move data between systems, and a MindStudio agent, called by webhook or API, to do the AI-heavy step. If you are still comparing other options, see our list of the best n8n alternatives for AI agents, and our comparisons of n8n vs Make and n8n vs Zapier.

The quickest way to decide is to build the same small agent on both. MindStudio’s free plan includes one agent and 1,000 runs a month, and n8n Cloud lets you start without running a server. For a cost breakdown, see MindStudio pricing explained.

Conclusion

MindStudio and n8n overlap on AI agents but come from opposite directions. MindStudio starts from the agent and makes it easy for non-developers to build, price and ship one. n8n starts from the workflow and makes it easy for technical teams to automate whole processes, with AI agents as one powerful step and free self-hosting as an option. Decide who builds and where the agent will live, then try each on one real task before you commit.

Is MindStudio better than n8n?

Neither is better overall. MindStudio is better for non-developers building AI agents and AI apps. n8n is better for technical teams automating processes across many systems, especially if they want to self-host.

Is MindStudio cheaper than n8n?

At low volume they cost about the same: MindStudio Individual is $20 a month plus model usage, and n8n Starter is €20 a month billed yearly for 2,500 executions plus your own model bill. At higher volume MindStudio’s unlimited runs can be cheaper than n8n Cloud, while self-hosted n8n has no platform fee at all.

Can I self-host MindStudio like n8n?

Only on MindStudio’s custom-priced Business plan. n8n’s Community edition is free to self-host.

Does MindStudio charge extra for AI models?

MindStudio says model usage is charged at cost with no markup, the same as using your own provider keys. You can also bring your own keys.

Can MindStudio and n8n work together?

Yes. A common pattern is to let n8n handle triggers and integrations, then call a MindStudio agent through its webhook or API for the AI step.
