Runpod vs Vast.ai comparison

Runpod vs Vast.ai is a choice between a managed GPU cloud and a GPU marketplace. Runpod sets its own prices, offers dedicated Pods and Serverless workers, bills per second and charges nothing for data transfer. Vast.ai connects you to independent hosts who set their own prices, which can make it cheaper, especially with interruptible instances, but prices move with supply and demand, bandwidth is charged per byte, and the quality of hosts varies. Choose Runpod for production inference and predictable costs; choose Vast.ai for the lowest price on work that can tolerate interruptions.

Pricing Model

Runpod publishes a price per GPU. On its pricing page, Pods start around $0.59 an hour for an A40 and go to $3.99 for an H100 SXM, with cheaper Community Cloud rates on several GPUs. Serverless costs more per hour but only bills while workers are alive. Our Runpod pricing guide works through when each is cheaper.

Vast.ai does not have a fixed rate card. Its documentation says hosts set their own prices, which vary by GPU model, number of GPUs, host reliability, location and market conditions. You choose between on-demand (fixed price, guaranteed resources), reserved (up to 50% off with pre-payment) and interruptible (often over 50% cheaper than on-demand, but the instance may be paused). To see live prices, you search offers in its dashboard or CLI.

So which is cheaper depends on the day and the GPU. Vast.ai’s interruptible instances are often the lowest price available for a given GPU. But add bandwidth charges (Runpod charges none) and the cost of any work lost to interruptions before you compare.

Reliability and Operations

  • Runpod resources on on-demand Pods are dedicated and cannot be displaced by other users. Serverless adds automatic scaling, and you are not charged while a host machine is unavailable.
  • Vast.ai depends on the host you pick. Its documentation lists host reliability as one of the factors in price; cheaper hosts can be less dependable, and interruptible instances can be paused.
  • Both stop your instances when your balance runs out, and both keep charging for storage on stopped instances. Back up data you cannot afford to lose.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Runpod if…Choose Vast.ai if…
You serve inference in production or demosPrice matters more than predictability
You want fixed per-GPU Serverless prices with scale-to-zero flex workersYour jobs can be checkpointed and resumed
You move a lot of data in and outYou are comfortable choosing hosts by reliability and location
You want fixed, published pricesYou run experiments, batch jobs or hyperparameter sweeps

Many teams use both: Vast.ai for cheap, interruptible experiments and Runpod for anything users depend on. For a comparison with a traditional GPU cloud, see Runpod vs Lambda.

Conclusion

Runpod and Vast.ai both rent GPUs by the second, but they sell different things. Runpod sells a managed platform with fixed prices, Serverless and free data transfer. Vast.ai sells access to a marketplace where prices can be lower and interruptible instances lower still, at the cost of variability. Match the provider to how much an interruption would cost you.

Is Vast.ai cheaper than Runpod?

Often, especially with interruptible instances, which Vast.ai says are frequently over 50% cheaper than on-demand. But prices vary by host and over time, and Vast.ai charges for bandwidth while Runpod does not.

Is Runpod more reliable than Vast.ai?

Runpod on-demand Pods use dedicated resources that other users cannot displace. On Vast.ai, reliability depends on the host you choose, and interruptible instances can be paused.

Does Vast.ai have serverless GPUs?

Yes. Vast.ai offers Serverless endpoints with autoscaling worker groups, set up from its dashboard, Python SDK, CLI or API. Runpod also offers Serverless, with flex workers that scale to zero and published per-GPU rates.

Which is better for training?

For long training runs, both work. Vast.ai can be cheaper if your training can resume from checkpoints after an interruption; Runpod is simpler if you need the run to continue without interruptions.
